of Jiuquan City. 2. Bell and Drum Tower A three-story wooden structure
in tower shape standing at the center of
the city proper of Jiuquan . It was first built in 346. Over the four gates beneath
the tower there are inscriptions saying :"northward to the desert","westward
to Yiwu",etc indicating the geographical location of Jiuquan and its significance
in communication. 3. Luminous cups Highly polished high-grade wine
cups made of jade produced in Qilian Mountains. 4. Brick murals unearthed
in the tombs of wei and Jin dynasties northeast of Jiayuguan city. Jiayuguan
pass Jiayuguan pass at
the western end of the Great Wall extends southward to the Taolai River near the
snow-capped Qilian Mountains and northward to the precipices of the Heishan Mountain
On the mountains meanders the GreatWall. The Jiayuguan Pass tower, strategically
located between the Qilian Mountain and Mazong Mountain guards the east-west passageway
at the western end of the Great Wall and is the best preserved pass . Surrounded
by three inner and outer walls and several lines of defense, Jiayuguan was a vital
